LUMINOUS LANTERN DESIGNS

with Barbara Grauke Sunday, May 19, 2024 11 AM – 3 PM Come join Madrone Glass Artist Barbara Grauke for a Fused Glass workshop at Madrone Arts in Pescadero. In this workshop, designed for adults 18 or older, Barbara will offer a first step into the world of fused glass. She will guide participants in the creation and design of a six panel glass and metal lantern. The supply fee ($15.) covers multiple colored glass shapes – some cut and pre-fired (prepared by the artist) – a metal lantern and six glass panels. The class will include step-by-step instructions on the placement of glass pieces on a panel, ideal color combinations, use of opaque- versus transparent-colored glass, and use of textured glass – all with the goal of creating an overall cohesive design. Each participant will design and temporarily glue glass shapes onto panels to create their individual lantern. After the workshop the instructor will fire the panels in her kiln to finish the lanterns. Attendees will be able to pick up their completed lantern on the following Sunday, May 26, between 11 am and 5 pm at the Madrone Gallery. Barbara says that working with glass can be both intimidating and exciting but since no glass skills are needed, participants can explore and experiment freely without feeling intimidated. About the Artist Barbara Grauke has a BFA from Tyler University with a major in glass. She has worked with many glass artists and has also worked since the 1970's in stained glass, glassblowing, and presently in powdered kiln fired glass work which she shows at Madrone Arts.

SEAWEEDS: BEAUTY & USE

with Kathleen Dickey Sunday, June 9, 2024 8 AM - 11 AM Join Madrone artist Kathleen Dickey for a family-friendly adventure, starting at the tide pools of Pescadero where attendees will collect and explore drift seaweeds. After the outing, participants will return to the Madrone Arts gallery with their seaweed treasures. They will put their samples onto acid-free paper in a plant press to preserve them. At the same time they will learn more about seaweeds and their uses and even sample some seaweed-based foods like kelp cake and nori frittata! Kathleen will send the pressed samples to the participants once they have dried. What a wonderful way to share the beauty and wonder of our coastal environment! Further directions and information will be sent to participants once registered. Kathleen Dickey holds a MS Marine Sciences and has spent many years studying, collecting and teaching about seaweed. This is an early start for a Madrone workshop, but Kathleen reminds us (along with Chaucer!) that “time and tides wait for no one”.

MAKING PINE NEEDLE BASKETS

with Cata Gomes Saturday, June 22, 2024 10:00 am - 2:00 pm In this unique workshop experience, participants will learn the ancient skill of pine needle coil basket weaving as taught by indigenous elder, Cata Gomes. As a way to connect with and learn about ancestral weaving practices, students will be taught basic basket weaving skills using natural fibers, gain an understanding about gathering and processing materials such as pine needles and kelp and become familiar with a variety of stitches used in basket construction. This workshop is for all ages (children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). By the end of the class, participants will have created their own small coiled pine needle basket. About the Instructor Catalina Gomes grew up in San José, where she witnessed the transitions of the “Valley of the Heart’s Delight” into today’s “Silicon Valley”. She found refuge in the redwood forests living off the grid, establishing a closer relationship to the earth and the ocean. As a young adult, Cata learned she was descended from the Salinan Tribe. It recently came to light that her family also has lineage to Rammaytush and Bay Miwok ancestry. The Mission Dolores records revealed Muchia Te’ as the family matriarch who links Cata’s lineage to the Rammaytush Tribe. She is dedicated to the rematriation of her ancestral homeland, and has founded the Muchia Te’ Indigenous Land Trust (MTILT) which is named in her family Matriarch's honor..
