Hand Embroidery Samplers

with Linda Bea Miller Sunday, September 22, 2024 1:00 to 4:00 PM Open up to the infinite possibilities of embroidery! Join artist Linda Bea Miller for a basic embroidery workshop where you’ll learn 12 different embroidery stitches while creating your own sampler. You will also be introduced to the many interesting ways you can enhance your artwork or clothing using embroidery stitches. Materials will be provided and each participant will receive a small instruction booklet, a hoop, floss, and a sampler to continue to practice and work on after the end of the class. While this workshop is open to all ages, children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Instructor, Linda Bea Miller says, “I have never been without a needle and thread and have samples of work I did at age 5! As my hands age, so does my ability to do these fine stitches and I want to pass this skill on to others. I always thought embroidery was only for decorating linens, however, now I am using it to enhance the picture stories I want to tell. Making a statement with embroidery adds another whole dimension to the 2-D image.”

Layering and Mixed Media

with Susan Friedman Sunday, October 13, 2024 10 AM - 5 PM Layering with mixed media is an expressive way to create layers and depth in an artwork. With Susan’s instruction, participants can have fun, let go of perfectionism and create a vibrant and innovative work of art. They will explore the basic principles of design and composition and will be introduced to mixed media/layering processes and materials such as mark making, layering paint and paper, excavating and more. They will finish their projects with cold wax and finally polish the piece. Materials for the class are included in the fee, except for the panels, which will be available for purchase in class. The workshop is open to adults over the age of 18. On the subject of Creativity, Susan offers this quote from musician Charles Mingus: “Creativity is more than just being different. Anybody can plan weird; that’s easy. What’s hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.” Susan Friedman (photographer/filmmaker, mixed media artist) is an award- winning documentary filmmaker and photographer. Friedman has been a still photographer for many years and has had one-women shows both nationally and internationally, including Tokyo, Amsterdam, Berlin, and San Francisco. Her still work is collected by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Oakland Museum, The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Susan continues to exhibit in galleries and magazines and her work is held in private collections. She was on the Art department faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz for 30 years. Delma is an accomplished multidisciplinary artist whose recent inquiry has been focused on exploring the Sacred Feminine. Her Invisible Goddess Project and series on The Emerging Feminine are evocations and exaltation of the feminine to create a “female euphoria” and a celebration of the sexual exuberance and rising of life in its pure feminine form, a sort of postmenopausal ecstasy as a sacred challenge to patriarchy.

The Annex, located in the gallery accommodates up to 10 workshop participants.
