Drawn in 2020, after the horrific CZU fires that affected our area, “After the Fires, Beauty Persists”, I tried to communicate the relief I felt that, despite the devastation, something valuable amazingly remains. The fires were about a mile from our house and when we evacuated we really didn’t know if we would have a home to return to. Drawn on black paper, I wanted the colors to pop out – much as they do with fire itself.

“An Evening with Surati” was drawn using oil pastel crayons from a photo of my sister-in-law who lives in Spain. I thought that the photo conveyed a sense of calm that I hope I captured with this drawing. I also wanted to emphasize the highlighted colors as they responded to the light from that one lamp.
